Horizon-Scan with AI in 5 Minutes

5 minutes

What you’ll experience

1

Read a one-paragraph school context (Rivergate, a fictional Gulf international school)

2

Use a ready-made horizon-scan prompt with ChatGPT or Claude

3

Compare what AI surfaces with five signals the full course would have you track

This is Session 2 of the full lab. The complete Strategic Foresight Lab runs six sessions across the SIGNAL framework (Scan · Interpret · Generate · Navigate · Act · Learn) and produces a one-page Future-Ready Action Brief you can walk into a senior-team meeting.

Step 1: The school context

Rivergate’s one-paragraph context statement — the anchor every session of the full course returns to. In the real course you’d write your own in Session 1; here we’ve pre-filled it.

Rivergate is an independent international through-school (ages 3–18) of 1,100 students in a Gulf city. Recent inspection rated us good with outstanding features. Our community is led by aspirational parents who increasingly compare schools on AI-enabled personalisation. We are entering a 24-month window where the national regulator may align our assessment regime to the local framework. Teacher retention in STEM/CS is under pressure as adjacent industries widen the salary gap. Neurodivergent enrolment has risen 12% year-on-year. A new campus build is scheduled for 2028, constraining discretionary spend until then. Strengths: strong pastoral provision, low staff turnover outside STEM, established board. Pressures: AI adoption pace, possible assessment shift, STEM staffing, capital allocation.

Step 2: The horizon-scan prompt

Copy this prompt verbatim, then paste the school context where indicated. The key instruction is the labelling: every signal must say likely from context / general pattern / speculative / needs verification. That single rule turns AI from an oracle into a hypothesis machine.

Act as a strategic foresight analyst for schools. Using the school context statement below, identify 10 weak signals that could affect our school over the next 3–5 years. Group them by: teaching, assessment, staffing, wellbeing, parent expectations, technology, and operations. For each signal, explain why it matters and what early evidence we might monitor. For each signal, label it as one of: - Likely from our provided school context - General education pattern - Speculative possibility - Needs local verification [Paste school context statement here]

Step 3: Run it

Open your preferred AI tool in a new tab

Paste the prompt first, then paste the school context where the prompt says [Paste school context statement here]

Send. AI should respond with ~10 signals, each labelled by source confidence
